How to fill in the European accident statement

The European accident statement replaces the police for minor accidents. Fill it in correctly and you will have no trouble getting the damage paid. Here is how, step by step.

When the accident statement is used

The accident statement is enough when there is minor damage to property, nobody is injured and both parties agree on what happened. In that case you do not need to call the police.

Do call the police if anyone is injured, if you disagree about fault, if the other party has left the scene, or if you suspect alcohol.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Shared details — date, time, place, whether anyone is injured, whether there are witnesses.
  2. Details of vehicles A and B — policyholder, vehicle, insurer, policy number and driver details for each vehicle.
  3. Circumstances — in the middle of the form, tick the boxes that apply to your vehicle (for example “was stationary/parked”, “was changing lanes”). At the bottom, write the total number of boxes ticked.
  4. Sketch — draw the position of the vehicles, the direction of travel, the lanes and the signs.
  5. Damage and remarks — describe the visible damage and any remarks.
  6. Signatures — both parties sign and each keeps their own copy.
A signature on the accident statement is not an admission of fault — it confirms the description of events. Fault is determined by the insurer on the basis of the circumstances and the sketch.

Common mistakes

What happens next

Report the claim — if you are not at fault it goes to the other driver's third-party liability cover; if you are, or the culprit is unknown, use your comprehensive cover. Attach the statement, the photographs and your vehicle details. Keep your own copy.

You don't have to keep track of this on your own

Frequently asked questions

Is signing the accident statement an admission of fault?

No. The signature confirms the description of events; fault is determined by the insurer on the basis of the circumstances and the sketch.

What if we disagree about fault?

Do not fill in a disputed statement — call the police to establish the facts instead.

Do I need the police if I have an accident statement?

No, unless there are injuries, a dispute over fault, someone leaving the scene, or a suspicion of alcohol.

Where do I get the form?

You get it with your insurance policy or from your insurer; keep a copy in the vehicle.
